Chapter 22

A Dangerous Proposition

I jolted awake later that afternoon, realizing I’d fallen asleep from exhaustion. Slightly dazed, I trudged out of bed to answer the knock that had awakened me. Gregor stood on the other side, his expression unreadable. “Lady Katya, I am here to take you to Central Tower.” His eyes raked over me with a sudden hunger that caught me off guard. When he caught himself, he turned away, averting his eyes, “Do you want a minute to freshen up?”

I looked down to find that my bodysuit had unzipped down the middle, showing quite a bit of revealed skin down to my navel. Cheeks enflamed, I quickly adjusted it and stepped out of the doorway. “I’ll be out in a minute.” I closed the door, finger-combed my hair, and adjusted my afro into a top bun.

I exited my room to find Gregor already walking down the hallway. “Let’s go to dinner, shall we?” I hustled to reach him and finally caught up at the tower’s base. We walked in silence to Central Tower, though I did risk a couple of glances Gregor’s way. If he saw them, he never acknowledged them.

“Are you going to tell me what the plan is?” I asked softly as we walked through the courtyard.

His jaw clenched. “I will ask them to put you in a soulbind.”

I stopped short. “A soulbind? What the heck is that? And why do you look so tense?”

Gregor paused, his gaze still evading mine. The mention of the ‘soulbind’ weighed heavily on him, making his typically steadfast demeanor falter. “It’s the only solution that can work. If they allow you to do this, I’m sure the Generals will come to the same conclusion.”

I slowly moved closer to the Scot, lightly touching his arm. “Look at me. What’s going on?” Gregor cleared his throat before turning towards me. Even as the sky darkened, his eyes shone brightly with worry and trepidation. “A soulbind is essentially a Kyrios prison. If a Kyrios changes sides or becomes a liability, a soulbind is the soul’s version of handcuffs. It’s normally meant for those who have lost all control and begun to change into the Want.”

I could feel my brows arch high into my hairline. “Kyrios can change into the Want?”

“Any spiritual creature can.” Gregor’s eyes bore into mine, quietly conveying something to me. “Becoming a Want creature is simply a matter of choice, of where your loyalties lie. To change your loyalties from peaceful interaction to absolute destruction by a Kyrios is not tolerated, especially because we have pledged ourselves to fight. The Vis bind can be a horrible device used to cause immense pain. After several hours, the soul can only take so much.”

Horror-struck, I demanded, “And you want to put that on me?”

“No!” Gregor shook his head, rubbing his forehead, exasperated. “I hate that I’ve even come to this conclusion at all. But I know how the Generals think. Their concern is not your mother but the entire Live Realm. They need to protect all humans from not just the Want but you too.
